El Torito Pin
Torito de Barranquilla is an expression of resistance of the Barranquilla Carnaval. El Carnaval de Barranquilla is the largest folklore celebration in Colombia and the second largest in Latin America. Carnaval celebrations, like many others in Latin America, started as a celebration for slaves; a time to let loose, release stress and find all possible silver linings to an oppressive state.
The masks formed shaped in the colonial city of Cartagena but in Barranquilla, they found a home. Intricate masks were paired with ancestral moves, rhythms, and music from mother Africa. Today’s masks maintain the artisanal handmade traditions whilst adding more color to the original African versions. The Torito represents the resilience of Black and indigenous spirits longing and often dancing for freedom.
