On September 23 1868, a multitude of Puerto Ricans revolted for independence from Spain. “El Grito de Lares” is Puerto Rico’s first cry for independence after the Taino uprising of 1511. The rebellion took place in the small rural town of Lares, Puerto Rico. The flag was hand stitched by Mariana Bracetti, an anti-imperialist and poet. The flag was designed by Ramon Emeterio Betances.
There is a connection between the Dominican Republic and the Lares flag. Independentist cells started to form and spread throughout the island, but it wasn’t until January of 1868 that Segundo Ruiz Belvis and Ramón Emeterio Betances planned the revolution and created the Revolutionary Committee of Puerto Rico while in exile in the Dominican Republic.
The Lares flag is a symbol of resistance. Lares is known as the birthplace of Puerto Rican nationalism.
