Anacaona Short Sleeve Tee

“Purest light and the best-balanced spirit of the island”.

Cacique Anacaona, was born in Yaguana, (Léogane, Haiti), in Xaragua, in 1474. She was a beautiful queen, with a powerful artistic vein that she could express through her areítos (poems). Her name is composed of two words “Ana” which means “Flower” and “Caona” which means “Golden”, Golden Flower.

Anacaona died in 1503 in hands of Spanish rule after a long conflict against the domination that had looted and enslaved the entire Taíno population. It was because of her courage and her brave gestures in defense of the Taino population that Anacaona was arrested and sentenced to death.

As one of the first protectors of the island of Kiskeya(Haiti & Dominican Republic), Anacaona’s spirit remains in our hearts, her intelligence remains in our mindset. People in Kiskeya celebrate her as a significant icon in history. Haitian American author Edwidge Danticat wrote an award-winning novel, from The Royal Diaries series, Anacaona: Golden Flower, Haiti, 1490. Puerto Rican salsa composer Tite Curet Alonso celebrates her in his song “Anacaona” interpreted by salsero Cheo Feliciano. Furthermore, we can enjoy singer Irka Mateo’s “Anacaona”.
